Big doorway at the west end of the Coal Bunkers.
Prior to 1962, railroad coal cars would would enter into the uppcr "house"
through this doorway. The belly doors of the coal cars would open, and
the load of coal would fall down into the storage compartments of the Coal
Bunkers. The mighty Bunkers were built very strong.
In about 1962, the long inclined railroad ramp that led up to the Bunkers was removed and replaced by an electric powered steel coal conveyor system. Photo by RSG 1997 |
